Recently, I had the pleasure of teaching a speech and performance workshop at American Stage in St. Petersburg, Florida. This wasn’t my first time working with this amazing group—it was my second opportunity to connect with their talented actors, and once again, it was an incredibly rewarding experience.
During the workshop, I shared a step-by-step process I’ve designed for script interpretation. This method is something I’ve developed over years of experience in acting, directing, and coaching, and it’s tailored to help actors unlock their creative potential while navigating the challenges of performing.
The Process
The process begins by addressing the most common barriers actors face—uncertainty about the script and resistance to connecting with their character. This system is all about resetting intentions, letting go of preconceived notions, and embracing a smooth, resistance-free approach to performance.
Actors often get stuck in their heads, overthinking the lines or doubting their choices. My process helps them become aware of this resistance so it doesn’t interfere with their performance. By guiding them through each step, I empower them to “sink their teeth” into the script and truly embody the character they’re bringing to life.
Why It Works
What makes this approach so effective is that it allows actors to:
Let go of mental blocks and self-doubt.
Explore their characters from a place of curiosity and creativity.
Develop a deeper connection to the script without overanalyzing.
Perform with authenticity and confidence.
These tools aren’t just about acting—they’re about self-awareness, which is key to delivering powerful performances that resonate with audiences.
An Incredible Group
The actors at American Stage are a joy to work with. Their energy, willingness to learn, and dedication to their craft make teaching workshops like this incredibly fulfilling. Watching them take the tools I’ve shared and apply them in real-time is always inspiring.
This has been my second time working with this group, and I can confidently say they’ve made a lasting impression on me. It’s always fun to collaborate with passionate, creative minds, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of their artistic journey.
Looking Ahead
Workshops like these remind me of why I love what I do. Helping actors tap into their full potential and overcome the barriers that hold them back is a privilege, and I look forward to continuing to share this process with more groups in the future.
